Addiction To Food And Your Health

food addiction

When things like addiction to food and health are brought up, most people simply work with concepts like healthy eating habits and exercise, but often, it goes beyond that.

Food addiction is a serious issue that merits discussion in its own right. It is a problem that affects not only the person who has it, but also their friends and family.

Essentially, the problem of food addiction is one that combines a food craving with a food allergy. When a person has this condition, they are drawn to a certain food and when they are unable to have it, they experience symptoms that are not unlike withdrawal.

Addiction Treatment Myths

other drugs

In May of 2006 HBO, USA Today and The Gallup Poll asked US adults, who had an immediate family member with a drug or alcohol addiction whether they thought addiction was a disease.

Three-quarters of U.S. adults who have a family member suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction think that addiction is a disease.

Whether you agree or disagree alcoholism was first recognised as a disease as early as 1785, by Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence and physician of George Washington's Army.

In his widely dispersed essay on "the effects of ardent spirits," Rush clearly called intemperance a disease and, an addiction.

Addiction Recovery - Steps For Having a Wonderful 2009 Free From Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

Don't feel that if you've failed in the past with addiction recovery, relapsed or have broken promises to yourself over and over again about change that it is hopeless. Life can bring many difficult situations including relationship traumas, financial losses, separation from children, physical injuries and family of origin flashbacks. Sometimes drug and alcohol abuse is from past memories and not even current situations. Things can eat at us and circumstances may break our hearts. Then we carry this hurt into family life and new problems arise.

It sounds cliche, but each day can be a new start. When you catch yourself falling into self-hatred, self-blame or anger at yourself, just tell yourself gently that you don't want to feed those negative thoughts anymore. The mind can be our greatest friend or enemy. Don't beat yourself again saying how you always are at fault. Be aware that all these buzz words like loser, jerk or failure are just part of your past conditioning and you don't need them anymore.

Addiction to Clutter

Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find that at least half the people raised their hands.

One of my clients told me that she was trying to help her sister get back on her feet after her sister had been laid up with an illness and lost her job. Her sister's house had always been a mess, and had become so filled with clutter that there was no place to walk or sit. My client, Rebecca, offered to buy her sister a car if she would clean up her house. Rebecca even offered to help her sister clean up the house. Rebecca was shocked when her sister refused the offer, even though she desperately needed the car. He sister was unwilling to get rid of the clutter.

Addiction Treatment: Prescription Medication Abuse by Parents and Their Children

prescription medication

Although drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crack or ecstasy seem to get all the attention, the rate of prescription drug abuse among teens has grown at a higher rate than illegal drugs.

In 2003, 2.3 million kids between the ages of 12 and 17 admitted to abusing prescription medication according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. It is reported that 83.4 percent abused opiates such as Oxycontin, Vicodin, Dilaudid, 24.6 percent tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax, 5.6 percent sedatives such as Seconal and 25.1 percent stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin.

An additional statistic reported is that teens who abuse prescription medication are twice as likely to abuse alcohol, five times more likely to abuse marijuana, 12 times more likely to abuse heroin and 15 times more likely to abuse ecstasy.

Addiction Support - Treating Alcohol Abuse

It is a common practice to have a drink during dinner, at a social function, celebrations, or even in the evening before going to bed. On the other hand, binge drinking can be classified as a dangerous habit, which can result in vomiting, loss of sensory perception, blackouts and in the end, dependency. This insidious abuse can progress so rapidly and unexpectedly, that the involved often does not realize it has become a dangerous problem, not just for themselves, but also for their loved ones. Loss of consciousness can indeed lead to accidents, rape and additional health risks, such as contracting venereal diseases and AIDS through unprotected sex.

Addiction to "Perfection" - Women and Body Image

your body

Every woman has done it. Uttered those words that undermine the image we have of ourselves and our bodies. I'm too fat. I hate the way I look. If only I my breasts were larger, or I were taller, shorter, had longer legs, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles...and the list goes on and on. Do any of these statements sound familiar? If so, you are not alone.

In our society, thin figures, youth, and fitness are considered to be more valuable. But throughout history, most societies valued fat bodies and fat diets. The fat people were rich, the thin were poor. Now in our Western society it is the other way around.

A Good Multivitamin Supplement Increases Your Happiness Level

multivitamin supplement

A healthy person is a happy person. There has never been a statement truer than this. A body can never be healthy if it lacks minerals and vitamins. Minerals and vitamins are the basic need of the body. Without them, the body fails to function at its optimum, and this can cause disease, malfunction and other kinds of disorders in the body. So, for a person to be truly happy, a healthy body is essential. This can only be achieved with the intake of a balanced diet consisting of the necessary nutrients.

Reasons for nutrient deficiency

Memory loss and depression are two main problems faced by people who lack minerals and vitamins in their daily food. Recent studies have revealed a sad fact about the human race. Nearly every human being lacks at least one nutrient. This could be due to various reasons, the first one being personal taste. We all, at some point or the other, are fussy about what we eat. For example, children hate vegetables, so they lose out of the vitamins obtained from eating vegetables. Vegetarians, on the other hand, lose out on minerals and vitamins gained from meat and poultry products. Some people are also allergic to dairy products. Hence, they lose out on a lot of nutrients.

A Good Pure Water System Is Essential For Your Families Health

reverse osmosis

Pure water systems are made by a variety of companies. With prices as low as $40 and as high as several thousand, you might need to know how to choose an appropriate system for your home. This shopping guide should help.

Purification Steps

Some purifiers include only one step. Others include multiple steps. The purpose of including additional steps is to remove specific contaminants.

Examples of the steps and the contaminants removed are included in the following paragraph.

Cysts can be removed through reverse osmosis or sub-micron filtration. Lead can be removed through reverse osmosis or ion exchange. Chemicals like chlorine can only be removed through the process of adsorption. Different absorptive materials are needed for different chemicals. For example, carbon is the best material for the removal of chlorine, but is not sufficient for the removal of cancer-causing THMs.

Addiction Relapse Prevention - Using the Cross Addiction Worksheet to Reduce Odds of Relapse

other drugs

Many recovering people who begin the process of becoming clean and sober, harbor the notion that they can continue to hang on to some remnants of an old drinking/using lifestyle. They often initially believe that specific drugs are The Problem. Initially alcoholics/addicts may not consider use of other drugs (including alcohol) as problematic. When the idea of being addicted to all mood altering drugs does come up, the idea is often dismissed as not being applicable. Denial and an absence of insight makes other historical drug use or even recent drugs used to "help with getting over" a drug problem, seem unimportant. When addicts compare the impact of the most recent drug of choice on their lives with other drug episodes, the other drugs probably pale in comparison.

Addiction Recovery - Preparing For an Alcohol Or Drug Intervention

inpatient treatment

When family members are gearing up for an intervention to get their loved one into alcohol and/or drug rehab, they tend to be understandably nervous about it. Alcoholics and addicts are not exactly waiting around, biding their time in joyful anticipation of an intervention. They will be angry. There will be resistance. Family members do not have to be reactive to their anger and can stay on task with an intervention if well prepared.

In considering an intervention, you should decide who you want to participate. Ask yourself these questions: Who has influence on the addict? Who loves them? Who does the addict love? Who does the addict respect? What the addict most fear the loss of? Who would be the weak link in doing an intervention?

Addiction Recovery - How To Jump Start Your Fitness Program - Part 1

back problem

Part 1: Asking for Help:

Recovery from a life threatening disease such as addiction requires a balanced approach of the mind, body and spirit. In the following series of articles, I am going to examine the physical fitness (body) component of a comprehensive recovery program.

In the following example, it should be noted that the recovering person has medical clearance from his health professionals and is prepared to embark upon his recovery journey.

Charlie is a retired 63 year old man who has spent three months in a chemical dependency centre and another two months in a half-way house. He is recovering from serious alcohol and drug abuse issues and has five months of sobriety. He is regularly attending AA and aftercare meetings and has the support of his family, friends, employer and counselors. He has suffered two heart attacks in the last two years and is 50 pounds overweight. He gets out of breath easily and finds walking exceedingly painful because of an ongoing low back condition.

Addiction Treatment: Is Drug Addiction Easier To Treat Than Alcoholism?

addiction treatment

While many people still try and define addicts as different from alcoholics, the fact of the matter is that the definition of addiction or alcoholism is almost identical. The main difference is that one is liquid in nature, while the other can take on a variety of forms. The overall effects of addiction or alcoholism are exactly the same.

Drug Addiction Treatment Versus Alcoholism Treatment

Since the medical profession has come to see drug addiction and alcoholism as primarily the same disease, there is little difference in drug addiction or alcoholism treatment. While it is true that different medications may be used in a drug rehab, addiction treatment center or alcohol treatment program while the patient is in detox, addiction treatment philosophy or alcohol treatment philosophy are primarily the same.

Addiction - Physical Or Psychological?

that addiction

Who Understands Addiction?

Understanding addiction has never been an exact science, especially to those who are in the front line trying to help people in their recovery. It can be argued that addiction is a chronic relapsing illness. Many in the world, who don't understand this definition as applied to addiction, (and often the drug users themselves), think that perhaps addiction is just a matter of choice and making right decisions.

More Light and Less Heat Needed

Over recent years our understanding of addiction is gradually having some light shone upon it. The revelation is gradually unfolding a bit at a time. It's as if we weren't ready for it all in one go. Those who work with recovering addicts are often mystified at the high relapse rate especially when a person has completed, say, a 12 month programme and got a network of support around them. They just figure it's par for the course. If you want to work with addicts - get used to going to funerals!

Addiction Recovery - What Families Need to Know

your loved

How can he be so selfish? He can clearly see how much pain he's causing why doesn't he care? I can't take the stress any longer. He's destroying all of our dreams. Our lives have become Hell. Isn't he tired of living this way?

These are the typical thoughts that run through your mind when you love a person with a drug or alcohol dependency. You can't understand why he continues on such a destructive path. Why does he make so many bad choices? Why does he cause so much pain to his family and loved ones?

It makes no sense that he continues to drink or take drugs even in the face of devastating consequences. He may know that you're going to leave him, that his children are hurting, that his job is on the line, that he is about to lose everything of value in his life, yet he can't seem to stop.

Finally saturday morning tee time has arrived and so have you. You have met up with the hand picked victims of your crusade. The General is in command, your strategy is paying off. The first three holes yours without competition.

Addiction Treatment Regimes

abused substance

In the past, addiction was treated as a moral or personal flaw, not a physiological condition. Thus treatment often was nonexistent. As the need for therapy became clear, early treatment regimes were instituted. Treatment often consisted of psychological support for the patient, or occasionally, not even that: in some nations, treatment consisted of forcing the individual to undergo "cold turkey" withdrawal in a prison cell. While psychological support for the patient is a necessary part of any treatment regime, methods based only on such support or m a worst case scenario on simultaneous deprivation of both substance and support were only partially successful.

Addiction Treatment is Not Only for Addicts and Alcoholics

I used to joke that I was addicted to more. That's more of what's bad for me not what's good or right. Society is full of temptations these days and so it's hardly surprising that more and more folks are struggling with addictions of varying kinds. Many will think of addictions as being related to alcohol or narcotics whether that's hard drugs or pharmaceuticals, but addictions are a lot broader than that. In fact, folks can get addicted to just about anything and everything be it people, places, or things.

Being a recovered alcoholic and addict, I had no trouble qualifying as a therapist simply because of first hand experience and understanding of the addictive personality. I see new patients almost daily who are addicted to food, exercise, video games, work, tobacco, and of course drink and drugs. Usually, by the time an addict reaches my office they are pretty well broken by their addiction and so in most cases I suggest he or she takes time out to attend an addiction treatment facility.

Addiction & Alcoholism - Can You Have a Relative Committed for Treatment?

When things get bad, when they won't listen to reason and when their substance abuse is obviously causing them great harm, can you have them involuntarily committed for their own good?

It depends.

Firstly, the law regarding involuntary commitment varies by state and eligibility equipments will differ, but in general, all states do allow for involuntary treatment under certain extreme and urgent situations.

In most cases, the person in question will need to present with recent behaviors that clearly show that they demonstrate an immediate danger to harm themselves or harm others. If they are neglectful to their basic needs to an extent that puts them in immediate harms way, and these needs cannot be met by family, then the state may also intervene.

Addiction and Alcoholics

Is addiction new? No. It is thought that one of our ancestors may have discovered the effects of fermented fruit or grain by accident, or inadvertently inhaled smoke from herb leaves tossed on a fire. As a result, getting high or intoxicated-getting out of oneself in an artificial way-has been a goal or at least part of every culture. "Drunkenness" has been seen as a problem in various societies for a long time, and when it gets out of hand, it has been punished. Until fairly recently, however, most psychoactive drugs were legal. Nineteenth-century America has been called a "dope paradise," and it was only in the early 20th century that drugs began to be seen as sources of "abuse" that needed to be regulated by laws. Even alcohol was outlawed in the United States in the early 20th century. But laws have not stopped people from using alcohol or drugs.

Addicted To Food? Acupuncture Can Help!

little heroin

If you take a good look at our society, it's easy to see that the majority of the population is at least slightly overweight. And it's also easy to see why-too much time sitting at computers, grabbing take-out from restaurants that have ridiculous portions...but the real reason why most people gain weight is because they are fighting a battle with their subconscious, and losing.

Think about this: how do you feel when you are in the process of eating? If you're trying to be healthy and eating a giant bowl of raw spinach, do you get the same feeling you have when eating an ice cream sundae? Probably not, unless you have some sort of spinach fetish. There are places in the world where this bowl of spinach would look like the nectar of the Gods..after all, if you are struggling just to consume enough calories to stay alive, anything looks good.

Addiction - Recognising the Symptoms

their addiction

Spotting the warning signs of addiction within the family unit is no simple matter. There are many different forms of addiction, each with their own unique symptoms. Fortunately, there are still many aspects of addict behaviour that are common to most addictions.

There are two fundamental ways to spot an addict. When someone becomes compulsive, dependent and reliant on their addiction there are certain physical and psychological signs that become apparent. Although not exactly the same for every addict, it is likely that they will adopt at least some of the behaviour described in this article.

When recognising addiction you need to keep an eye out for secrecy. This is one of the dominant behaviours that all addicts adopt. It doesn't matter if they are using drugs, gambling or shopping, an addict will always become increasingly secretive the more they immerse themselves in their addiction.

Addiction & Alcoholism - Why Can't They Stop?

brain will

If you've never been addicted, never physically or psychologically dependent on drugs or alcohol, it can be very tough to understand how someone can destroy themselves so tragically, tough to understand how they can continue to drink or drug even in the face of seriously increasing consequences. Why can't they just stop? Why do they need to lose everything? How can it possibly be worth it?

Once someone develops an addiction though, they are no longer completely in control of their actions. They may seem as though they choose their course in life, and in the beginning they do of course make the decisions to use drugs or drink to excess, but once addicted, things change. Once addicted, a deep preconscious part of the brain starts pulling the strings. You're not fully aware of it, you can't control it, but it exerts a great influence; and it keeps you abusing even in the face of very adverse consequences.

This is why anyone who is striving to excel in MMA should pay close attention to their MMA diet.
