Addiction to Clutter

Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find that at least half the people raised their hands.

One of my clients told me that she was trying to help her sister get back on her feet after her sister had been laid up with an illness and lost her job. Her sister's house had always been a mess, and had become so filled with clutter that there was no place to walk or sit. My client, Rebecca, offered to buy her sister a car if she would clean up her house. Rebecca even offered to help her sister clean up the house. Rebecca was shocked when her sister refused the offer, even though she desperately needed the car. He sister was unwilling to get rid of the clutter.

Addiction Treatment: Prescription Medication Abuse by Parents and Their Children

prescription medication

Although drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crack or ecstasy seem to get all the attention, the rate of prescription drug abuse among teens has grown at a higher rate than illegal drugs.

In 2003, 2.3 million kids between the ages of 12 and 17 admitted to abusing prescription medication according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. It is reported that 83.4 percent abused opiates such as Oxycontin, Vicodin, Dilaudid, 24.6 percent tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax, 5.6 percent sedatives such as Seconal and 25.1 percent stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin.

An additional statistic reported is that teens who abuse prescription medication are twice as likely to abuse alcohol, five times more likely to abuse marijuana, 12 times more likely to abuse heroin and 15 times more likely to abuse ecstasy.

Addiction Support - Treating Alcohol Abuse

It is a common practice to have a drink during dinner, at a social function, celebrations, or even in the evening before going to bed. On the other hand, binge drinking can be classified as a dangerous habit, which can result in vomiting, loss of sensory perception, blackouts and in the end, dependency. This insidious abuse can progress so rapidly and unexpectedly, that the involved often does not realize it has become a dangerous problem, not just for themselves, but also for their loved ones. Loss of consciousness can indeed lead to accidents, rape and additional health risks, such as contracting venereal diseases and AIDS through unprotected sex.

Addiction to "Perfection" - Women and Body Image

your body

Every woman has done it. Uttered those words that undermine the image we have of ourselves and our bodies. I'm too fat. I hate the way I look. If only I my breasts were larger, or I were taller, shorter, had longer legs, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles...and the list goes on and on. Do any of these statements sound familiar? If so, you are not alone.

In our society, thin figures, youth, and fitness are considered to be more valuable. But throughout history, most societies valued fat bodies and fat diets. The fat people were rich, the thin were poor. Now in our Western society it is the other way around.

A Good Multivitamin Supplement Increases Your Happiness Level

multivitamin supplement

A healthy person is a happy person. There has never been a statement truer than this. A body can never be healthy if it lacks minerals and vitamins. Minerals and vitamins are the basic need of the body. Without them, the body fails to function at its optimum, and this can cause disease, malfunction and other kinds of disorders in the body. So, for a person to be truly happy, a healthy body is essential. This can only be achieved with the intake of a balanced diet consisting of the necessary nutrients.

Reasons for nutrient deficiency

Memory loss and depression are two main problems faced by people who lack minerals and vitamins in their daily food. Recent studies have revealed a sad fact about the human race. Nearly every human being lacks at least one nutrient. This could be due to various reasons, the first one being personal taste. We all, at some point or the other, are fussy about what we eat. For example, children hate vegetables, so they lose out of the vitamins obtained from eating vegetables. Vegetarians, on the other hand, lose out on minerals and vitamins gained from meat and poultry products. Some people are also allergic to dairy products. Hence, they lose out on a lot of nutrients.

A Good Pure Water System Is Essential For Your Families Health

reverse osmosis

Pure water systems are made by a variety of companies. With prices as low as $40 and as high as several thousand, you might need to know how to choose an appropriate system for your home. This shopping guide should help.

Purification Steps

Some purifiers include only one step. Others include multiple steps. The purpose of including additional steps is to remove specific contaminants.

Examples of the steps and the contaminants removed are included in the following paragraph.

Cysts can be removed through reverse osmosis or sub-micron filtration. Lead can be removed through reverse osmosis or ion exchange. Chemicals like chlorine can only be removed through the process of adsorption. Different absorptive materials are needed for different chemicals. For example, carbon is the best material for the removal of chlorine, but is not sufficient for the removal of cancer-causing THMs.

Addiction Relapse Prevention - Using the Cross Addiction Worksheet to Reduce Odds of Relapse

other drugs

Many recovering people who begin the process of becoming clean and sober, harbor the notion that they can continue to hang on to some remnants of an old drinking/using lifestyle. They often initially believe that specific drugs are The Problem. Initially alcoholics/addicts may not consider use of other drugs (including alcohol) as problematic. When the idea of being addicted to all mood altering drugs does come up, the idea is often dismissed as not being applicable. Denial and an absence of insight makes other historical drug use or even recent drugs used to "help with getting over" a drug problem, seem unimportant. When addicts compare the impact of the most recent drug of choice on their lives with other drug episodes, the other drugs probably pale in comparison.

Addiction Recovery - Preparing For an Alcohol Or Drug Intervention

inpatient treatment

When family members are gearing up for an intervention to get their loved one into alcohol and/or drug rehab, they tend to be understandably nervous about it. Alcoholics and addicts are not exactly waiting around, biding their time in joyful anticipation of an intervention. They will be angry. There will be resistance. Family members do not have to be reactive to their anger and can stay on task with an intervention if well prepared.

In considering an intervention, you should decide who you want to participate. Ask yourself these questions: Who has influence on the addict? Who loves them? Who does the addict love? Who does the addict respect? What the addict most fear the loss of? Who would be the weak link in doing an intervention?

Addiction Recovery - How To Jump Start Your Fitness Program - Part 1

back problem

Part 1: Asking for Help:

Recovery from a life threatening disease such as addiction requires a balanced approach of the mind, body and spirit. In the following series of articles, I am going to examine the physical fitness (body) component of a comprehensive recovery program.

In the following example, it should be noted that the recovering person has medical clearance from his health professionals and is prepared to embark upon his recovery journey.

Charlie is a retired 63 year old man who has spent three months in a chemical dependency centre and another two months in a half-way house. He is recovering from serious alcohol and drug abuse issues and has five months of sobriety. He is regularly attending AA and aftercare meetings and has the support of his family, friends, employer and counselors. He has suffered two heart attacks in the last two years and is 50 pounds overweight. He gets out of breath easily and finds walking exceedingly painful because of an ongoing low back condition.

Addiction Treatment: Is Drug Addiction Easier To Treat Than Alcoholism?

addiction treatment

While many people still try and define addicts as different from alcoholics, the fact of the matter is that the definition of addiction or alcoholism is almost identical. The main difference is that one is liquid in nature, while the other can take on a variety of forms. The overall effects of addiction or alcoholism are exactly the same.

Drug Addiction Treatment Versus Alcoholism Treatment

Since the medical profession has come to see drug addiction and alcoholism as primarily the same disease, there is little difference in drug addiction or alcoholism treatment. While it is true that different medications may be used in a drug rehab, addiction treatment center or alcohol treatment program while the patient is in detox, addiction treatment philosophy or alcohol treatment philosophy are primarily the same.
