Addiction - Physical Or Psychological?

that addiction

Who Understands Addiction?

Understanding addiction has never been an exact science, especially to those who are in the front line trying to help people in their recovery. It can be argued that addiction is a chronic relapsing illness. Many in the world, who don't understand this definition as applied to addiction, (and often the drug users themselves), think that perhaps addiction is just a matter of choice and making right decisions.

More Light and Less Heat Needed

Over recent years our understanding of addiction is gradually having some light shone upon it. The revelation is gradually unfolding a bit at a time. It's as if we weren't ready for it all in one go. Those who work with recovering addicts are often mystified at the high relapse rate especially when a person has completed, say, a 12 month programme and got a network of support around them. They just figure it's par for the course. If you want to work with addicts - get used to going to funerals!

Addiction Recovery - What Families Need to Know

your loved

How can he be so selfish? He can clearly see how much pain he's causing why doesn't he care? I can't take the stress any longer. He's destroying all of our dreams. Our lives have become Hell. Isn't he tired of living this way?

These are the typical thoughts that run through your mind when you love a person with a drug or alcohol dependency. You can't understand why he continues on such a destructive path. Why does he make so many bad choices? Why does he cause so much pain to his family and loved ones?

It makes no sense that he continues to drink or take drugs even in the face of devastating consequences. He may know that you're going to leave him, that his children are hurting, that his job is on the line, that he is about to lose everything of value in his life, yet he can't seem to stop.

Addiction Treatment Regimes

abused substance

In the past, addiction was treated as a moral or personal flaw, not a physiological condition. Thus treatment often was nonexistent. As the need for therapy became clear, early treatment regimes were instituted. Treatment often consisted of psychological support for the patient, or occasionally, not even that: in some nations, treatment consisted of forcing the individual to undergo "cold turkey" withdrawal in a prison cell. While psychological support for the patient is a necessary part of any treatment regime, methods based only on such support or m a worst case scenario on simultaneous deprivation of both substance and support were only partially successful.

Addiction Treatment is Not Only for Addicts and Alcoholics

I used to joke that I was addicted to more. That's more of what's bad for me not what's good or right. Society is full of temptations these days and so it's hardly surprising that more and more folks are struggling with addictions of varying kinds. Many will think of addictions as being related to alcohol or narcotics whether that's hard drugs or pharmaceuticals, but addictions are a lot broader than that. In fact, folks can get addicted to just about anything and everything be it people, places, or things.

Being a recovered alcoholic and addict, I had no trouble qualifying as a therapist simply because of first hand experience and understanding of the addictive personality. I see new patients almost daily who are addicted to food, exercise, video games, work, tobacco, and of course drink and drugs. Usually, by the time an addict reaches my office they are pretty well broken by their addiction and so in most cases I suggest he or she takes time out to attend an addiction treatment facility.
