Addiction To Food And Your Health

food addiction

When things like addiction to food and health are brought up, most people simply work with concepts like healthy eating habits and exercise, but often, it goes beyond that.

Food addiction is a serious issue that merits discussion in its own right. It is a problem that affects not only the person who has it, but also their friends and family.

Essentially, the problem of food addiction is one that combines a food craving with a food allergy. When a person has this condition, they are drawn to a certain food and when they are unable to have it, they experience symptoms that are not unlike withdrawal.

Addiction Treatment Myths

other drugs

In May of 2006 HBO, USA Today and The Gallup Poll asked US adults, who had an immediate family member with a drug or alcohol addiction whether they thought addiction was a disease.

Three-quarters of U.S. adults who have a family member suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction think that addiction is a disease.

Whether you agree or disagree alcoholism was first recognised as a disease as early as 1785, by Dr. Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence and physician of George Washington's Army.

In his widely dispersed essay on "the effects of ardent spirits," Rush clearly called intemperance a disease and, an addiction.

Addiction Recovery - Steps For Having a Wonderful 2009 Free From Drugs and Alcohol Abuse

Don't feel that if you've failed in the past with addiction recovery, relapsed or have broken promises to yourself over and over again about change that it is hopeless. Life can bring many difficult situations including relationship traumas, financial losses, separation from children, physical injuries and family of origin flashbacks. Sometimes drug and alcohol abuse is from past memories and not even current situations. Things can eat at us and circumstances may break our hearts. Then we carry this hurt into family life and new problems arise.

It sounds cliche, but each day can be a new start. When you catch yourself falling into self-hatred, self-blame or anger at yourself, just tell yourself gently that you don't want to feed those negative thoughts anymore. The mind can be our greatest friend or enemy. Don't beat yourself again saying how you always are at fault. Be aware that all these buzz words like loser, jerk or failure are just part of your past conditioning and you don't need them anymore.

Addiction to Clutter

Clutter is a big problem for many people. At a lecture that I gave, I asked for a show of hands regarding how many people had problems with clutter and disorganization. I was surprised to find that at least half the people raised their hands.

One of my clients told me that she was trying to help her sister get back on her feet after her sister had been laid up with an illness and lost her job. Her sister's house had always been a mess, and had become so filled with clutter that there was no place to walk or sit. My client, Rebecca, offered to buy her sister a car if she would clean up her house. Rebecca even offered to help her sister clean up the house. Rebecca was shocked when her sister refused the offer, even though she desperately needed the car. He sister was unwilling to get rid of the clutter.

Addiction Treatment: Prescription Medication Abuse by Parents and Their Children

prescription medication

Although drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crack or ecstasy seem to get all the attention, the rate of prescription drug abuse among teens has grown at a higher rate than illegal drugs.

In 2003, 2.3 million kids between the ages of 12 and 17 admitted to abusing prescription medication according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. It is reported that 83.4 percent abused opiates such as Oxycontin, Vicodin, Dilaudid, 24.6 percent tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax, 5.6 percent sedatives such as Seconal and 25.1 percent stimulants such as Adderall or Ritalin.

An additional statistic reported is that teens who abuse prescription medication are twice as likely to abuse alcohol, five times more likely to abuse marijuana, 12 times more likely to abuse heroin and 15 times more likely to abuse ecstasy.

Addiction Support - Treating Alcohol Abuse

It is a common practice to have a drink during dinner, at a social function, celebrations, or even in the evening before going to bed. On the other hand, binge drinking can be classified as a dangerous habit, which can result in vomiting, loss of sensory perception, blackouts and in the end, dependency. This insidious abuse can progress so rapidly and unexpectedly, that the involved often does not realize it has become a dangerous problem, not just for themselves, but also for their loved ones. Loss of consciousness can indeed lead to accidents, rape and additional health risks, such as contracting venereal diseases and AIDS through unprotected sex.

Addiction to "Perfection" - Women and Body Image

your body

Every woman has done it. Uttered those words that undermine the image we have of ourselves and our bodies. I'm too fat. I hate the way I look. If only I my breasts were larger, or I were taller, shorter, had longer legs, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles...and the list goes on and on. Do any of these statements sound familiar? If so, you are not alone.

In our society, thin figures, youth, and fitness are considered to be more valuable. But throughout history, most societies valued fat bodies and fat diets. The fat people were rich, the thin were poor. Now in our Western society it is the other way around.
